The National Film Awards were first presented in the year 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s ‘Directorate of Film Festivals’. The awards were introduced by the government to honor and encourage films made across India. Every year a panel is elected by the government which selects the winning entry. The award ceremonies are generally held in New Delhi and the awards are presented by the President to the winners for the year. The winners are honored with a cash prize of Rs.1, 00,000 and a Swarna Kamal. The ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’ award was introduced in 1975 and was first presented to the Hindi film ‘Kora Kagaz’ directed by Anil Ganguly. ‘Kora Kagaz’ was produced by Sanath Kothari and is a remake of a 1963 Bengali film ‘Saat Pake Bandha’.
