The Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film is presented every year during the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, which is conducted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to honor artists and professionals for their distinguished work in the field of television and films. The award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film is given to recognize brilliant performance of an actor in a leading role of a miniseries or motion picture made for the small screen that positioned him as the best in the category for that year.
The HFPA started honoring outstanding television works from the 13th Golden Globe Awards held in February 1956. The category of Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film was introduced during the January 30, 1982, held 39th Golden Globe Awards. Earlier to this, actors were nominated for their performances in a miniseries or television film in the Best Actor – Television Series Drama category. American actor, producer, vaudevillian and radio entertainer Mickey Rooney became first recipient of the Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film award in 1982, winning it for playing title role in the American made-for-television biographical drama film Bill. During the 46th Golden Globe Awards (1989), English retired actor Michael Caine won the award for playing Chief Inspector Frederick Abberline in the television film drama Jack the Ripper, tying with American actor Stacy Keach for the latter’s portrayal as Ernest Hemingway in the television miniseries Hemingway, thus marking the only tie in this category so far. American actors Al Pacino and James Garner, and American actor and filmmaker Robert Duvall bagged two awards each, marking the most wins by a performer in the category. American actor James Woods holds the record of earning most nominations in the category with 7, out of which he won one in 1987 for his performance as D.J. in the American drama television film Promise.
Puerto Rican actor Raúl Juliá was posthumously awarded in the category in 1995 for portraying the character of Francisco "Chico" Mendes in the American made-for-television biographical drama film The Burning Season. Ewan McGregor won the award in 2018 for playing two roles that of brothers Emmit and Raymond "Ray" Stussy in third season of the American anthology dark comedy crime drama television series Fargo. American actor Ving Rhames was bestowed with the accolade during the 55th Golden Globe Awards (1998) for portraying the character of noted fight promoter and boxing manager Don King in the American television film Don King: Only in America. After receiving the award, Rhames handed it over to American actor Jack Lemmon, another nominee in the category that year, and said "I feel that being an artist is about giving, and I'd like to give this to you." Other notable personalities who won the award include Ted Danson, Gary Sinise, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Brian Dennehy, James Franco, Bill Nighy and Idris Elba.
