The country’s prestigious National Film Awards were first presented in 1954. From 1973, the award ceremonies were administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. The government appoints a national panel every year to select the winning entry. The President of India hands out the awards to the winners for the year. The awards are presented to honor and encourage the films which are directed across the borders of India featuring Indian art and culture. The ‘Best Animated Film’ award is one of the sub-categories of Non-Feature Film Awards and was introduced in 1999. The inaugural award was bagged by Arun Gongade for the film ‘Education Only her Future’.
