The National Film Awards are considered the most prominent film award ceremony in India. The prestigious film awards were established in 1954 and are administrated by the Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973. Every year the award ceremony is held in New Delhi and the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. The awards are given by the President of India to the winners for the year. The awards were introduced by the government to encourage and honor the movies directed across India. The ‘Best Feature Film in Assamese’ award was first introduced in 1977 and was presented to Bhabendra Nath Saikia for the movie ‘Xondhyaaraag’. Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia was a short story writer, film director and novelist from Assam. He has won many literary awards which includes Sahitya Academy in 1976 and was also honored with the Padma Shri.
