The first National Film Awards were handed out in the year 1954. The Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals administers the award ceremonies since 1973. The Government of India introduced the awards to honor and encourage films that are directed across India. A panel is appointed by the government every year to select the winning entry. The National Film Awards are held in New Delhi and the President of India presented the awards to the winners. The ‘Best Book On Cinema’ award was introduced in the year 1982 and the award winners were decided after a thoughtful judgement of the National film award jury. The inaugural award was bagged by the author Aranthai Narayanan for his book ‘Thamizh Cinemavin Kathai’. This was for the first time that a Tamil book on Cinema won the award.
