The Indian cinema industry saw the rise of the Filmfare Award in the year 1954. The awards are given to the prominent films in Bollywood which were released in the previous year. The winners are selected through popular vote. The best costume design award was introduced in 2007 to acknowledge the best of costume designers in the Indian cinema industry. Dolly Ahluwalia was the first artist to pick the inaugural award for the film ‘Omkara’. She is a Canadian costume designer and film/television actress who has swept several other prestigious Indian film awards as well.
