The National Film Awards are considered as India’s most prestigious film awards. It is the most prominent and oldest Filmfare Awards, established in the year 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies have been administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. The Best Direction Award is listed under the Golden Lotus Award category. The winners are honored with a cash prize of Rs.1, 00,000 and a Swarna Kamal (golden lotus). A national panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entry and the President of India presents the awards to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Direction’ award was introduced in 1968 and was first awarded to Satyajit Ray for the film ‘Chiriakhana’. Satyajit Ray was an Indian Bengali filmmaker and was regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th century cinema.
