The country’s prominent National Film Awards were established in 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies were administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. The awards were presented to the films directed across the Indian borders featuring Indian art and culture. Generally, the National Awards are held in New Delhi and the awards are handed out by the President of India to the winners for the year. Each year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. The ‘Best Feature Film in English’ award was first introduced in the year 1995 and inaugural award was bagged by Dev Benegal for the film ‘English August’. The storyline of the movie was adapted from the novel written by Upamanyu Chatterjee in 1988. ‘English, August’ was the first feature film by Dev Benegal in 1994, which was recognized as a landmark in the contemporary Indian cinema.
