The glamorous world of Hindi Cinema has always attracted young and beautiful girls. Many pretty girls nurture the dream of being an actress and with that idea; they come to Mumbai - the 'City of Dreams'. However, hardly a handful of them are able to grab a role and make their debut. Filmfare Best Female Debut Award seeks to acknowledge those few actresses who manage to outshine in the crowd of newcomers. The award for Best Female Debut was first given in 1988, when it was titled 'Filmfare Lux New Face Award' (except for a special award given to Tabu in 1995, for Best Female Debut). In 1999, the last 'Filmfare Lux New Face Award' was given to Preity Zinta. Later on, it was renamed as 'Filmfare Best Female Debut Award'.
