The National Film Awards are considered the most prominent and prestigious award ceremony in India. The government established the awards in 1954 to honor and encourage the films directed across India. Each year the Indian government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. The award ceremonies are generally held in New Delhi and the President of India presents the awards to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Female Playback Singer’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award which was introduced in the year 1967. The inaugural award was presented to K.B. Sundarambal for the track ‘Ariyathu Ariyathu’ from the Tamil movie ‘Kandan Karunai’. The movie was released in 1967 and was directed by A.P. Nagarajan. The movie is about Lord Murugan and his birth to accept the head post of the army in heaven is portrayed.
