The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance was first handed out in 1968. It was discontinued after 1977. For four years, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1977 it was awarded as the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance (other than soul gospel). The Academy split the award into two new awards in 1978. It was divided into the Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Performance, Traditional and Best Gospel Performance, Contemporary. In 2008, the award had two recipients, The Clark Sisters for Blessed and Highly favored and Aretha Franklin & Mary J. Blige for Never Gonna Break My Faith.
