The Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance has been handed out since 1990. A year before the introduction of a separate award for hard rock, in 1989 it was presented as Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. In 1990 a separate award was formed for Best Metal Performance. The title was changed to Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal from 1992 to 1994. Living Colour and The Smashing Pumpkins are the only bands to win the awards for more than one year in a row.
