The Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo has been handed out since 1959. Until 1979 the award was presented to instrumental and vocal performances. Over the years the award has had several minor changes in the title. It was known as Best jazz Performance, Individual in the year of its introduction. In 1960 it was known as Best Jazz Performance - Soloist. For the next ten years the award was known as with the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group. It was awarded as Best Jazz Performance by a Soloist from 1972 to 1978.In 1979 it was changed once again to Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Soloist. It was changed twice more before the Academy changed the title to the presently used Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Michael Brecker was presented the award six times making him the most awarded artist in the category.
