The Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album has been handed out since 1961. The title of the award had specified instrumental performances from 1962 to 1971 and again from 1979 to 1991. Over the years the title of the award has had numerous minor changes. It was known as Best Jazz Performance Large Group in the year of its inception. It was changed twice before it was awarded as Best Instrumental Jazz Performance - Large Group or Soloist with Large Group from 1965 to 1971. It was awarded from 1972 to 1978 as Best Jazz Performance by a Big Band. From 1992 to 2000 it was awarded as Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance and in 2001 the present title of the award was introduced. American composer, pianist, and big band leader Duke Ellington won the award seven times making him the most awarded artist in the category.
