The prestigious National Film Awards were incepted in the year 1954. The award ceremonies have been administrated by Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973. The idea was developed by the government to honor and encourage the films directed across India which portray Indian art and culture. Each year a national panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entry. The awards are presented to the winners by the President of India in New Delhi. The ‘Best Make-Up Artist’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award which was introduced in 2007. The inaugural award was bagged by Anil Moti Ram Palande for the film ‘Traffic Signal’. The film is all about the struggle and the lives of people living around a fictitious traffic signal in Mumbai. The film also won ‘National Award for Best Director’ for the year.
