The National Film Awards were first introduced in 1954 to honor and encourage the films directed across India. Since 1973 the award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. Every year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. The National Film Awards are generally held in New Delhi and the awards are presented by the President of India to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Male Playback Singer’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award which was introduced in 1968. The inaugural award was presented to the track ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ from the Hindi film ‘Upkaar’. The movie was released in the year 1967 and was directed by Manoj Kumar. ‘Upkaar’ won the top spot at the box office and was presented with several major awards.
