The prominent National Film Awards were incepted in the year 1954 and were administrated by Directorate of Film Festivals from 1973. Each year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. Generally all the National Film awards are held in New Delhi and the winners for the year are awarded by the President of India. The National Film awards were introduced to honor and encourage the furthering of Indian art and culture. The ‘Best Feature Film in Marathi’ award was introduced in the year 1954 and the first award was bagged by ‘Shyamchi Aai’, directed by Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre. The story was taken from the book written by famous author and social activist Sane Guruji. The film is hailed as one of the greatest tribute to mother’s love in Marathi literature.
