The prominent National Film Awards were incepted in the year 1954. The ceremonies are administrated by the Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973. Each year a national panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entry. Generally, the award ceremonies are held in New Delhi and the President of India hands out the awards to the winners in the film industry. The ‘Best Music Direction’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award which was introduced in 1955. The inaugural award was presented to the film composer Ghulam Mohammed for his film ‘Mirza Ghalib’. The film is all about one-time wealthy and famous poet Mirza Ghalib directed by Sohrab Modi. It revolves around the trials, failures, success and finally the ultimate descent into poverty of the noble poet.
