The National Film Award was first presented in the year 1954. Since 1973, all the National Award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. The awards were introduced by the government to encourage and honor the films directed across the borders of India and also featured Indian art and culture. Each year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry and the President of India hands out the awards to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Film on Other Social Issues’ award was introduced in1967. The inaugural award was bagged by P. Bhaskaran for his Malayalam film ‘Iruttinte Athmavu’. For some unknown reasons there was a gap of 17 years (1968-1984) in this award category. Later in 1985 the award was presented to Shankar Nag for his Kannada movie ‘Accident’.
