From 1978 to 1983 the predecessor of this category was , the Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Traditional which was also known as the award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album. Famed American gospel singer and songwriter Shirley Caesar and The Blind Boys of Alabama are the most honored in this category with five wins each. Cissy Houston won the award twice, for Face to Face and her rendition of He Leadeth Me.
