Bollywood saw the inception of glitzy Filmfare Awards in the year 1954. The awards were introduced to encourage the artists for their performance in films (released previous year). The winners are selected on the basis of popular votes polled by the readers of the filmfare magazine. The 47th Filmfare Popular Awards were held on 16th February at Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai. The film ‘Lagaan’ was presented with eight awards for the year. The film is about the oppression of peasants by the British Raj (set in the Victorian period). The movie is also considered as a truly complete film. It was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The list of the categories and the winners for the year 2002 is shared in the following table.
