Kannada Film Industry is an important part of the Indian Cinema. It encompasses the movies in the state of Karnataka. While most of the movies are made in the Kannada language, there are a few which are made in the other regional languages like Konkani or Tulu. During the initial days of the industry, despite its lacking popularity, a few actors have left remarkable impression with their excellent acting skill. One of well-known personality of Kannada Film Industry is of Late Dr. Rajkumar, who acted in over 200 movies and a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The Kannada Film industry abounds in numerous talented actor and actress, who have embellished the industry and helped in earning a distinct recognition for it.
The first 'talky' of the Kannada Film Industry was made in the year 1934 titled Sati Sulochana, followed by Bhakta Dhruva (aka Dhruva Kumar). Both the films proved to be the major successes for the industry. The period between 1970s and the '80s is heralded as the 'Golden Age' of Kannada cinema. In addition to this, the period witnessed the birth of alternate cinema or what we, today, know as parallel cinema. Kannada cinema during this period had surpassed all the parallel cinema movement in India, along with Bengali and Malayalam cinemas. Gradually, it has occupied a prominent position in the Indian cinema industry. Since 1953, Filmfare is engaged in the task of honoring the talented people of the Kannada cinema, with the motive of encouraging them.
