The movies made in the state of Kerala, in Malayalam language, are known as Cinema of Kerala or Malayalam Cinema. Malayalam cinema plays a vital role as it is the most popular medium of entertainment for the people of Kerala. The immense popularity of the Malayalam cinema is for its socialistic leanings. The movies typically portray social or familial issues and as a result, it is considered more realistic than Bollywood movies. The industry has always taken its themes from social issues, interwoven with the material from literature, drama, and politics from the very beginning and presented it in the silver screen. The first Malayalam film was a silent movie titled 'Vigathakumaran' and released in 1928.
1951 released movie 'Jeevithanauka' gave new heights to the Malayalam Film Industry. It was widely accepted and popular and can be mentioned as the first 'Super Hit' flick seen by Malayalam Cinema. The period from 1986 to 1990, saw the making of some best films and it was referred as the "Golden Age" of the industry. The industry has gone through many phases of ups and down in filmmaking. From the year 2000, the industry witnessed a decline in the quality of Malayalam films, due to the politics in the film fraternity.
