The “Gospel” field was added to the Grammy in 1968. The award categories recognize achievements in various genres of gospel music. All the categories that have been awarded since the introduction of the Gospel Field at the Grammys are given below:
- Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album - The Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album was first handed out in 2007, it has been awarded annually ever since. The award was won twice by Kirk Franklin, in 2007 for Hero and in 2009 for The Fight of My Life.
- Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album - The Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Gospel Album has been handed out since 1991. The predecessor of this category awarded from 1978 to 1983 was named the Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Contemporary.
- Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album - The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album has been handed out since 1991.The award was titled best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus from 1991 to 1997. Carol Cymbala is the most decorated artist in this category with five wins.
- Best Gospel Performance, Traditional - The Grammy Award - Best Gospel Performance, Traditional was awarded from 1978 to 1983. It recognized performances by traditional Gospel artists. The Blackwood Brothers won the award thrice of the six times it was awarded.
- Best Gospel Performance, Contemporary - The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Contemporary was handed out from 1978 to 1983. The title was changed to Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance Contemporary or Inspirational in 1978 and remained that till 1982.
- Best Gospel Performance - The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance was first handed out in 1968. It was discontinued after 1977. For four years, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1977 it was awarded as the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance (other than soul gospel). The Academy split the award into two new awards in 1978.
- Best Gospel Song - The Grammy Award for Best gospel Song has been handed out since 2005. For her 2005 song Be Blessed, Yolanda Adams was awarded the first ever Grammy for Best Gospel Song. Multi-talented singer, song-writer, music director Kirk Franklin is the only artist to have won the award so far.
- Best Gospel Vocal Performance, Male - The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Vocal Performance, Male was first handed out in 1984. It was known as Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Male from 1984 to 1989. It was awarded for the last time in 1990.
- Best Gospel Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, Choir or Chorus - The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, Choir or Chorus was handed out from 1984 to 1990. In 1984 the award was introduced under the name Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group.
- Best Gospel Vocal Performance, Female - The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Vocal Performance, Female was given for the first time in 1984. The award was retired after 1990. The title of the award was Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Female, till 1989.
- Best Inspirational Performance - The Grammy Award for Best Inspirational performance was handed out from 1962 to 1986. The title of the award has had many changes over the years. It was known as Best Gospel or Other Religious Recording in the initial two years after its introduction. It was awarded as Best Gospel or Other Religious Recording (Musical) from 1964 to 1966. It was changed to best Sacred Performance (Musical) in 1967.
- Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album - The Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary gospel Album has been handed out since 1991. It was initially awarded as best pop Gospel Album, in 1994 the title of the award was changed to Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
- Best Rock Gospel Album - The Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album has been handed out since 1991. It was awarded as Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album for the first three years since its inception. It was changed to its current title in 1994.
- Best Soul Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group, Choir or Chorus - The Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group, Choir or Chorus was handed out from 1984 to 1990. The musically gifted family The Winans took home the award thrice and the sixth sibling in the family Daniel Winans won the award in 1990, the last year the award was handed out.
- Best Soul Gospel Performance, Contemporary - The Grammy Award Best Soul Gospel Performance, Contemporary was handed out from 1978 to 1983. The award was continued in 1991 as Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
- Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female - The Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female was handed out from 1984 to 1989. This award was later combined with the award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Male in 1990 and was awarded as Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Male or Female.
- Best Soul Gospel Performance, Male - The Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Male was handed out from 1984 through 1989. The award was combined with Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female in 1991 and awarded as the Grammy Award - Best Soul Gospel Performance, Male or Female.
- Best Soul Gospel Performance, Traditional - The Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Traditional was handed out from 1978 to 1983. In 1991 the Academy introduced a similar award the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.
- Best Soul Gospel Performance - The Grammy Award for Best Soul Performance was handed out from 1969 to 1977. The award was divided into two new awards in 1978, the Grammy Awards for Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Traditional and Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Contemporary.
- Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album - The Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album has been handed out since 1991. The award was first introduced as Best Southern Gospel Album and honored only southern gospel music, in 1994 the title was changed to Best Southern Gospel, Country Gospel or Bluegrass Gospel Album and in 1998 the name of the award was changed again to the currently used, Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album.
- Best Traditional Gospel Album - The Grammy Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album has been handed out since 1991. From 1978 to 1983 the predecessor of this category was , the Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Traditional which was also known as the award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.
