The year 2000 witnessed the dawn of the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards. The awards were introduced to showcase Indian cinema and was successful in winning the hearts of millions in the very first year of its inception. The IIFA best lyricist award winner is selected on the basis of the majority votes received by the viewers worldwide. The winner is judged for his/her performance in the film released in the previous year. The first award was presented to Anand Bakshi for the track ‘Ishq Bina’ (Film: Taal).
