The National Film Awards were established in 1954 and is considered as one of the most prominent film award ceremony in India. Since 1973, National Award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. Every year a panel is selected by the government which announces the winners. The ceremony is held in New Delhi, and the awards are presented by the President of India.
The Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director is a national film award. This award is presented with the greater objective of recognizing the talent of the Indian director in the cinema industry. After the judgement, the award is presented in cash to a feature film production by the jury of the national film awards. The inaugural award was bagged by Utpalendu Chakraborthy for the Bengali movie ‘Maina Tadanta’.
