The first category in the “Latin” field was introduced in the year 1976 when the category Best Latin recording was added to the expanding list at the Grammy Awards. Awards such as Best Salsa/Merengue Album and Best Latin Urban Album have been retired and minor changes in the titles of the categories have also been introduced after its addition to the field. Currently there are seven categories in the “Latin” field at the Grammy Awards. All the categories awarded under the Latin field are given below.
- Best Latin Pop Album - The Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album has been handed out since 1984. Over the years the Academy has introduced several minor name changes to the category, it was known as Best Latin Pop Performance from 1984 to 1991.
- Best Latin Recording - The Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording was awarded from 1976 to 1983. In 1984 other categories such as Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album, Best Tropical Performance and Best Mexican/Mexican American Performance were added to the Latin field.
- Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album - The Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album has been handed out since 1998. It was awarded as Best Latin Rock/Alternative Performance until 2001.
- Best Latin Urban Album - The Grammy Award for Best Latin Urban Album has been handed out since 2008. The category was combined with the Latin Rock field in 2009 and awarded as Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album.
- Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album - The Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album has been handed out since 1984. The title of the award has had several minor changes over the years. It was known as Best Mexican-American Performance from 1984 to 1991.
- Best Norteño Album - The Grammy Award for Best Norteño Album was first awarded in 2009. Before the introduction of this category, norteño music albums were awarded within the Best Mexican/Mexican American Album field.
- Best Regional Mexican Album - The Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Album has been handed out since 2009. Reginal Mexican Album before 2009 was awarded within the Best Mexican/Mexican American Album field.
- Best Salsa/Merengue Album - The Grammy Award For Best Salsa/Merengue Album was first handed out in 2004.There were separate awards for best Salsa Album and Best Merengue Album before 2004.
- Best Tejano Album - The Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album has been handed out since 1999.Tejano is the name given to various forms of folk and popular music originating among the Hispanic populations of Central and Southern Texas.
- Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album - The Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album was first handed out in 1984. The title of the award was affected with numerous changes since its inception in 1984.
