The National Film Awards are one of the country’s prestigious and oldest Film fare Awards. The awards were first established in 1954 by the government to honor and encourage the films made across India. Each year a national panel was appointed to select the winning entry. The award ceremonies were generally held in New Delhi and the President of India hands out awards to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award which was first introduced in the year 1985. The inaugural award was presented to Victor Banerjee for the Bengali film ‘Ghare Baire’. The film was directed by Satyajit Ray in 1984 based upon the novel Ghare Baire (The Home and the World). The script deals with the emancipation of women and its effect on the men who love them.
