National Awards Best Supporting Actress

The country’s prestigious National Film Awards were introduced to encourage the furthering of Indian art and culture in the Indian film industry. The National Awards were incepted in the year 1954 to honor films directed across the borders of India. Since 1973, all the award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. A national panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entry every year. All the National Film Awards were held in New Delhi and every year the awards are given by the President of India to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award which was introduced in 1985. The inaugural award was presented to Rohini Hattangady for the film ‘Party’. She is a famous Indian film and Marathi theatre actress who has been honored with two Filmfare Awards and one National Film Award. She is mostly known for her performance as Kasturba Gandhi in the film ‘Gandhi’ (1982).
