The prestigious National Film Awards were first presented in the year 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies were initiated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festival. The awards were introduced to honor and encourage the production of films which promoted national integration and unity. The 55th National Film Awards were held at Vigyan Bhavan (New Delhi) on 7th September 2009. The Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni announced the awards for the year. The esteemed awards were presented by the President Pratibha Patil to the winners at the ceremony. Several awards were presented to films in Bengali, Tamil and other languages from India.
