The prestigious National Films Awards were inaugurated in the year 1954. Since 1973, all the award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. The government of India introduced the award ceremony to encourage and honor the films directed across India featuring Indian art and culture. The government appoints a national panel every year to select the winning entry. Generally the award ceremonies are held in New Delhi and the awards are presented by the President of India to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Choreography’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award and was introduced in the year 1997. The inaugural award was bagged by Prabhu Deva for the track ‘Vennilavae Vennilavae’ from the Tamil movie ‘Minsaara Kanavu’. The film was released in 1997 and was directed by Rajiv Menon. ‘Minsaara Kanavu’ is about a triangle love story between the three lead characters. The movie was marked for its musical-like quality and choreography.
