The National Film Awards are considered the most important and prominent film award ceremony in India. The awards were established in 1954, and are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973. A national panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entry for every year. The award ceremonies are generally held in New Delhi and are presented by the President of India. The ‘Best Cinematography’ award was first introduced in 1968 and the inaugural award was presented to M.N. Malhotra for the film ‘Hamraaz’ and S. Ramachandran for the movie ‘Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Men’.
