The country’s oldest and prominent National Awards were first established in the year 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals. The National Film Awards are considered as the most prominent and oldest film award ceremony in India. Each year a panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entry. All the National Film Awards are held in New Delhi and the President of India presents awards to the winners for the year. The awards are presented to honor the films that are directed across India which features Indian art and culture. The ‘Best Lyrics’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award and was first introduced in 1969. The inaugural award was bagged by the lyricist Kannadasan for the Tamil film ‘Kuzhanthaikkaga’. Kannadasan was one of the greatest poets and lyricist who contributed around 5000 lyrics besides 6000 poems and 232 books in Tamil language.
